MARC'S COFFEE SHOP, HIGH STREET
The sign above the window reads, 'Marc's Coffee Shop'. The sign
in the window used to read, 'Votadini Coffee Shop,' and I
was never too sure whose coffee shop this actually was. The
entrance leads to both the coffee shop and a sweetie shop, so
maybe Marc had the coffee shop and Votadini had the sweetie
shop, but I suppose at the end of the day it doesn't really
matter that much. It's now definitely Marc's (perhaps they had a
fist fight to decide things). Marc's Coffee Shop is housed in one of East Linton's many
18th century buildings, and is homely inside with a plethora of
home-baked knick-knacks. There are usually two soups on, and these
include such varieties as 'Yellow Split Pea' and 'Lentil and Ham' .
At my most recent visit an East Linton woman wandered in: 'Any
more of that soup from last night?' she asked with a desperate
look in her eye. Turns out it was all gone. The soup in question
was 'Mushroom with Cream, Garlic and Almonds.' Now that's
a soup. Marc's Coffee Shop just gets better and better.
PS - Check out the excellent butchers in East Linton High
Street. They have seriously tasty pie slices or cubes - I think
it's called Savoury Slice. It's like a pie that's been cut into
big chunks: pastry on the outside, a savoury meat filling, with
tomato and all sorts of good stuff. Best hiking pie I've had in
a good long while.
