The tartan used as a page background in The Good Soup Guide is the Black
Watch, the tartan of the Royal Highlanders, the Scottish regiment with
whom my grandfather served during the First World War. He was honourably
discharged on 30th July 1915 after suffering the disabling effects of
mustard gas.)
WHAT THE NEWSPAPERS SAY
Sometimes, when we visit a town in Scotland, we send a report
of our findings to a local newspaper. The report details things we liked
in the town, things we disliked, and areas where improvements could be
made. While at first glance some of these reports may appear severely
critical, our primary aim has always been the same, namely, to highlight
certain issues and failings, to focus on certain aspects that might turn
a town's fortunes around, and ultimately to improve Scotland's villages,
towns and cities, not just for visitors, but for the people who live
there. This is what the newspapers said...
